As part of the Corporate Claims Division, the Asbestos and Environmental Claims Unit handles complex pollution, toxic tort and asbestos claims and litigation.
The Asbestos and Environmental Claims Unit is currently searching for a Senior Claim Specialist or Claim Technical Director with experience in handling complex pollution and toxic tort claims.
This position can be hybrid office/remote in either our Cincinnati, OH home office or our field claim office in Schaumburg, IL. Full remote may also be considered. The job grade will be commensurate with the years of experience and skill level of the candidate hired for the position.
Responsibilities:
- Reviews and evaluates coverage and liability
- Manages and resolves litigated high exposure claims
- Negotiates settlements with or without assistance of counsel
- Oversees and actively manages counsel in resolving complex claims
- Continually evaluates effectiveness of counsel and provides input regarding replacement of counsel where necessary to assure optimal claim results
- Manages litigation and claim expenses
- Maintains accurate file documentation and timely manages claim correspondence
- Attends settlement conferences/mediations as needed
- Liaises with others in the department to assure coordination of account-wide activity
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Travels as needed, approximately 5-15%
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, law degree beneficial but not required
- Minimum of 6 years handling environmental contamination/pollution claims and toxic tort claims, including coverage aspects of same
- Strong analytical skills evaluating large amounts of information and drawing appropriate conclusions
- Excellent negotiation skills dealing with co-carriers, defense counsel and plaintiff counsel
- Ability to work within specific limits and authority on assignments of high technical complexity
- Functional knowledge of complexities of current and historical primary, umbrella and excess commercial general liability coverage
Unique Qualifications
Candidates possessing these skills and experience are highly preferred:
- Experience in complex litigation environment
- Proven success in litigation strategic planning on a case-specific and account-wide level
- Country-wide exposure to environmental claims, toxic tort claims and insurance coverage
- Keen understanding of environmental regulations and contaminated site investigation/remediation
- In-depth knowledge of current and emerging environmental and toxic tort litigation

Salary Range:
$101,000.00 -$135,000.00
