Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Application Engineer to join our software development team in our Worcester office. This role offers flexibility and can be performed fully in-office or hybrid. Remote work arrangement is a consideration.POSITION OVERVIEW:
In this role, you will play a crucial part in designing, developing, and owning high-quality software solutions. You will participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle from requirements gathering to deployment and maintenance. This person will be responsible for mentoring, growing, and hiring top engineering talent.
This is a full-time, exempt role.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Lead the d esign and development of highly reliable full stack solutions using React.js and Spring Boot.
- Build new applications, prototypes, and proof ‑ of ‑ concept solutions.
- Serve as a technical advisor with stakeholders and cross-platform teams to enable scalable platform capabilities.
- Own the design, coding, unit testing, deployment, and monitoring of the software you build.
- Work closely with product owners, developers, and stakeholders to ensure alignment on solution delivery.
- Translate business requirements into scalable, high ‑ performing systems.
- Ensure code quality through unit testing, code reviews, and adherence to best practices.
- Optimize application performance, security, and stability.
- Lead and participate in architecture and design reviews.
- Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies and contribute to continuous improvement.
- Mentor junior developers and provide technical leadership. Care deeply about the career growth and development of your team.
- Contribute to engineering standards, best practices, and process improvements.
- Build knowledge of P&C insurance concepts, business processes, and Hanover systems.
WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field OR 7+ years of professional software development experience.
- Strong work ethic, prioritization skills, and attention to detail.
- 10 + years of professional software development experience.
- 8 + years of deep handson fullstack development experience (React + Java).
- Expert knowledge of Java and Spring Boot.
- Strong knowledge of React.js.
- Proven
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent problem ‑ solving and analytical abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously.
- Excellent understanding of monitoring, observability, and application performance management.
- Must be eligible to work in the US without requiring sponsorship now or in the future (i.e Lawful Permanent Residence or US Citizen)
BONUS POINTS FOR:
- Experience with containerization (Kubernetes, Docker).
- Experience using GitHub Copilot or similar AI ‑ assisted development platforms.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated builds, and deployments.
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- Experience with UX/UI concepts and front ‑ end best practices.

The target hiring range for this role may vary based on geographic location and other factors, including merit or performance, demonstrated proficiency, skills for the role, education, travel requirements, and experience. Additional compensation may include an annual bonus (which could take the form of a general bonus, sales incentive, or short-term incentive), long-term incentive or spot recognition awards. The posted range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
