Company History

Founded in 1976 by Mary K. Rickman, AMCOL originally started as Columbia Medical Adjustments servicing the local Columbia, SC physician market. The daughter of Greek immigrants, Mary shortly thereafter enlisted her mother's help in answering the busy phones. It is believed that the heavy European accent of "Yia Yia" that led callers to believe that they needed to pay their debts as soon as possible! AMCOL has not stopped growing since. Mary also recruited her husband and children to join her team and encompass her vision of serving healthcare providers in account receivables collections. As the significance of account receivables, specifically unpaid and delinquent healthcare receivables, grew to providers in the 80's and 90's, so did AMCOL SYSTEMS. Today AMCOL is employee owned, focuses 100% in the healthcare market and serves clients across the country.

On February 10, 2011 AMCOL Systems received the ISO 27001:2005 Information Security Management System certification. This internationally recognized certification serves as proof of AMCOL’s commitment to the security of the confidential information that is provided to us by our clients.

ISO/IEC 27001 requires that management:

Systematically examine the organization's information security risks, taking account of the threats, vulnerabilities and impacts;
Design and implement a coherent and comprehensive suite of information security controls and/or other forms of risk treatment (such as risk avoidance or risk transfer) to address those risks that are deemed unacceptable; and
Adopt an overarching management process to ensure that the information security controls continue to meet the organization's information security needs on an ongoing basis.
At AMCOL, we believe it is the responsibility of all of our employees, not just our IS staff, Compliance Director, or Executive Management, to maintain a high level of security awareness and a commitment to compliance with our security policies and procedures.

As part of maintaining this certification, a third party auditor will conduct annual audits to ensure the continual maintenance of all ISO 27001 information security controls.

Maintaining the security of confidential information is not an option. Federal regulations require it, our clients expect it, and we must deliver it.

To increase and maintain corporate-wide quality assurance processes, AMCOL Systems sought Professional Practice Management System (PPMS) certification. PPMS certification is awarded by ACA International, the professional trade association for the collection industry.

PPMS is a management system for collection agencies based upon developing, implementing, and adhering to a set of industry specific professional practices and policies. PPMS focuses on how a company demonstrates continuous improvement and how it is managed and run. Agencies using PPMS can cut down on the number of mistakes it makes, increase communication among departments, and handle client issues in a more efficient and professional manner. PPMS allows each company to explore its processes and procedures which improves the overall efficiency and professionalism

PPMS includes 18 basic elements which fall into four broad categories:

· Those which relate to the overall management of the business
· Those which relate to the business activities
· Those which provide support to the businesses activities
· Those which provide client confidence

Under PPMS, a major nonconformance is a failure or significant deficiency while a minor nonconformance is not considered severe. Not adhering to the requirements of the client would be an example of a major nonconformance while the failure of a manager to approve an employee’s request for time off might be considered a minor nonconformance. PPMS is a safeguard to preventing nonconformities.

There are less than 75 PPMS certified agencies in the U.S. AMCOL Systems was the eighth such agency to obtain certification and did so in 2001. There are more than 4,500 ACA member agencies.
