From a DUA perspective, the role focuses on analyzing various aspects of the underwriting process to ensure compliance with internal policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations. The consultant will lead audits, assess underwriting quality, and provide detailed reporting on audit results. This position requires a strong understanding of underwriting principles, risk assessment, and audit methodologies.
In addition to these responsibilities, this role will also support and champion the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) underwriting audit process, which will be led by the business unit underwriting leaders. The Underwriting Audit Consultant will assist the business units through initial training on the required elements of the P2P process, including alignment on the purpose of the P2P questionnaire, navigating Athenium, adhering to timelines, and following all steps of the P2P process. From there, the Underwriting Audit Consultant will help underwriting teams conduct quarterly P2P audits designed to elevate our underwriting performance and improve our overall underwriting acumen.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
1. Conduct regular underwriting audits of multiline Delegated Underwriting Authority business, ensuring compliance with underwriting guidelines/program agreements and documentation quality.
2. Assess underwriting quality by reviewing files for selection, quoting, pricing, and compliance with corporate underwriting guidelines.
3. Prepare detailed reports on audit findings, highlighting trends, gaps, and recommendations for improvement for both DUA and Peer-to-Peer audits.
4. Collaborate with Delegated Underwriting Authority and Business Unit liaisons to ensure all DUA/P2P audit responses and necessary action plans are submitted within required timeframes.
5. Support audit-related projects, collaborating with leadership and underwriting teams to implement findings and recommendations within established timelines.
6. Partner with the Audit Leader and team members to enhance underwriting quality assurance and operational efficiencies.
7. Contribute to the development and refinement of corporate underwriting guidelines, philosophies, and strategic initiatives.
8. In collaboration with the Commercial Underwriting Audit Consulting Directors, aggregates and analyzes completed P2P audit results to identify trends, opportunities, and recurring issues for incorporation into quality-improvement initiatives at both the Product and Business Unit level.
9. Participates in secondary file reviews on randomly selected files to ensure consistency, accuracy, and adherence to audit requirements across underwriting leadership.
Reporting Relationship
Reports to the Commercial and Specialty Underwriting Audit AVP.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
1. Strong technical knowledge of underwriting theories and practices within the insurance industry.
2. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with internal and external business partners at all levels.
3. Superior analytical and problem-solving abilities; capable of managing multiple audits and projects simultaneously.
4. High attention to detail and a results-driven approach to resolving issues.
5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software. Experience with Athenium/Team Think is preferred.
6. Ability to adapt quickly in a rapidly evolving environment.
7. 5+ years of experience underwriting or auditing multiline commercial accounts. Prefer experience with Delegated Underwriting Authority programs and the ability to work effectively across Property and Casualty underwriting teams.
8. Ability to influence and drive change.
9. Willingness and ability to travel for certain Delegated Underwriting Authority audits when onsite reviews are required.

I n certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia , California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois , Maryland , Massachusetts , New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $72,000 to $141,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
