Description
Our Claims team is seeking a Litigation Auditor to join their team. This is a full time, exempt role. This is a hybrid or remote opportunity.POSITION OVERVIEW:
This position supports Hanover's legal invoice review program, playing a key role in managing the cost of outside legal defense. The Litigation Auditor is responsible for reviewing legal invoices on complex and high-exposure cases, including major case and specialty lines of business, to ensure accuracy, reasonableness, and compliance with billing guidelines. The role also involves educating panel firms on billing best practices, identifying opportunities for cost control, and partnering with claims leaders and adjusters to drive improved billing outcomes and legal spend efficiency.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
- Apply Legal Expertise: Review legal invoices submitted by retained law firms for reasonableness, accuracy, and compliance with company billing guidelines and industry standards.
- File & Documentation Review: Examine related claim notes, adjuster file materials, pleadings, and other supporting documentation to validate billed activities and ensure alignment with case strategy.
- Reporting & Communication: Report the results of invoice reviews to law firms and internal claims personnel, clearly documenting any adjustments or concerns.
- Collaboration with Claims Teams: Engage in regular communication with claims personnel, offering informed opinions and actionable recommendations regarding case status, litigation budgets, plans of action, and their impact on legal billing practices.
- Dispute Resolution: Negotiate and resolve billing discrepancies and conflicts with senior claims staff and outside counsel in a professional and constructive manner.
- Program Support: Assist in the implementation and ongoing execution of the legal e-billing program, including system use, process improvements, and vendor onboarding.
- Trend Analysis & Cost Control: Identify litigation and billing trends, flag potential inefficiencies, and recommend opportunities for legal expense control and process optimization.
- Industry Awareness: Stay current on legal billing best practices, e-billing technologies, and evolving industry standards to ensure continuous improvement and compliance.
WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree required.
- 5-10 years of litigation-related experience with a strong working knowledge of civil procedure and legal billing practices.
- Familiarity with the litigated claims process, particularly within insurance defense or related legal environments.
- Prior experience in legal invoice review and exposure to electronic billing systems strongly preferred.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess billing accuracy, identify trends, and recommend cost-control strategies.
- Confident decision-maker who evaluates the scope of issues and provides actionable options to drive resolution.
- High-level negotiation skills with the ability to resolve billing disputes professionally and effectively.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly express complex legal and business concepts.
- Demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships with internal claims teams and external legal partners.
- Skilled in conflict resolution and providing constructive feedback.
- Supports a collaborative environment that values diverse perspectives and encourages open communication.
- Anticipates and understands internal and external customer expectations, delivering service with professionalism and integrity.
